Dole, Nixon, Obama And Memorial Day

During World War II our leaders and soldiers did not consider failing as an option. Bob Dole served our country well as did Ronald Reagan.

The Dole’s and Reagan’s were men who thought first what was best for the country and then thought about how they could win an election. They were politicians who recognized that compromise was not a dirty word and they could not get everything they wanted.  They knew that their party was comprised of mere mortals and if someone was a Democrat they too were capable of good ideas.

If it was not for Watergate Nixon would be remembered as the President who got us out of Viet Nam and rekindled our relationship with China.

Compare these men to those in the Republican primary this past election; Gingrich, Romney, Paul, Cain, Bachmann, Santorum, Huntsman and Perry. No wonder we lost.

Ted Cruz and Rand Paul are talked about as candidates for 2016. If this is the type of candidate we have in 2016 we will lose again and we should. The Republican party has surrendered to the Tea Party.

Bob Dole was also right about Barack Obama. He does not realize communication is more than just a good speech. He still has not learned how to communicate including the art of listening. He blew it with health care by shutting the Republicans out of the discussion and has been paying a price ever since.

Further, Obama does not grasped the concept that for a president, failing is not an option. We are getting nowhere at resolving our economic problems including gaining better control of our debt. A major reason is the President has surrendered to complacency. He is our leader and he needs to lead.

Dr. Carson For President?

If we learned anything from our current President it is that experience matters. Also, success in one field does not guarantee success in another. Having the skill to perform brain surgery does not guarantee one will be a great President.

Hindsight says we made a mistake in not electing Hillary Clinton in 2008. Obama just did not have enough political and managerial experience to run the country. The same is true of the surgeon. In one of Dr. Carson’s speeches I heard him say jokingly, “Politics is not brain surgery”.

He is right, just like brain surgery is not professional football. Dr. Carson is obviously very intelligent. The one thing we learned from Obama is intelligence is not a substitute for experience. Both are needed to be President.

In this most recent election, Obama had the experience.

Economy And Global Warming

While reading a recent article by Tom Friedman in the New York Times titled The Market And Mother Nature I concluded our leadership is doing a poor job communicating to the American people. In a democracy, doing what is right will not occur unless the people believe it is the correct thing to do.

Therefore, it is the responsibility of those elected to educate the populace as to what is best for the country given the circumstances of the country and the world and then make it happen.

The science exist to substantiate much of global warming is caused by human behavior that can be reversed. Our financial problems are man made and therefore can be corrected. Our leaders must explain these problems and consequences and we are running out of time.

The outcome of global warming is catastrophic. This is easy to comprehend. It is the responsibility of the President to make sure the population understands that much of the warming problem is man made and there are solutions to reverse the trend.

Further, our financial condition must  not be swept under the rug. This again requires the President  to help the public understand we must get our debt under control or we will be aiding and abetting China becoming the dominant economic power sooner than later. The National Intelligence Agency is already predicting this will happen in a mere 17 years. ( )  If we continue our present course it may happen sooner.

Leaders must lead. The President must step back from the fray in Washington and explain the gravity of our problems to the people. Based on the last election, his campaign staff has the skills to assist him in delivering the message. Put them to work on the most important campaign confronting us. It is a campaign for the survival of our way of life.

Will Obama Be A Great President

Voters made the right decision in re-electing Barack Obama as President. Now he must decide whether he wants history to say he was the first black president or he was also one of our greatest Presidents. He has the opportunity to be the later if he takes the appropriate action outlined below.

1. Get out of Afghanistan and adjust the defense budget to fit reality. Reality is education is at least as critical to our future as defense and therefore transfer a portion of the defense budget to education.

2. Address Iran’s quest for a nuclear weapon including attacking them if necessary.

3. Focus foreign affairs efforts on the western hemisphere including helping Haiti. It we don’t China will. Also improve relations with the new democratic nations in the middle east.

4. Implement health care reform while acknowledging adjustments need to be made including enforcing anti-trust laws to make the industry more competitive.

5. Repeal the Supreme Courts decision on Citizens United concerning campaign contributions.

6. Invoke the Volcker Rule and break-up banks that are too big to fail.

7. Develop and implement a long term plan that will resolve our debt issue. This includes raising taxes on the wealthy and making cuts on expenditures including entitlement programs as necessary. Extend the cliff out to March 31, 2013 because the decisions are complex and more time is needed.

8. Further stimulate the economy, thus creating jobs, by making sound investments in our future including infrastructure, internet upgrades, education, transportation, energy exploration and rebuilding some inner cities that make sense. Pay for some of this by further reducing defense spending.

9. Aggressively seek retribution from entities causing the sub prime meltdown and use the proceeds to assist homeowners that were damaged to get relief. This in affect will be a stimulus costing the taxpayers very little money.

10. Enforce anti-trust legislation in those industries controlled by oligopolies or monopolies.

Making the right decision is usually the hard decision.
